The earth turns around,
The earth turns around.
One a day every day,
the earth turns around.

The moon goes round the earth,
The moon goes round the earth.
Once a mouth every mounth,
the moon goes round the earth.

The earth goes round the sun,
The earth goes round the sun.
Once a year every year,
the earth goes round the sun.

London, England, age 9

The environment has always been a concern of mine. At a young age I started to help around my neighborhood. Some of the things I used to do were pick up trash, plant flowers, and recycle cans. The place were I picked up trash was in the apartments were I used to live in. Also, it was when my elementary school planned on cleaning the whole neighborhood. The elementary school that I attended had a garden, not that far away from where it was located. I helped to water and plant vegetables and a different variety of flowers. Other things that I did was pick up trash around the block were I lived in. I picked it up when I went to the mail with my mother or in the evenings when I had free time. The manager from the place that I lived in was amazed by everything that I did to help those apartments look its best, and my neighborhood.

Close to my granny in Kampala there are tortoises which are said to have lived for over two hundred years. They belong to one family of Uganda, Chiefs Kisingiri. They were obtained from an Island in the Indian Ocean. Unfortunately they have not been helped to reproduce. One of them died last year after a heavy storm. Tourists come and see them. Children and adults ride on their backs. It seems like when they die they will not have a replacement.

From the age of 11, I have been cleaning streets with the Boys and Girls Club of America. Now I am 16 and still do so, because it gives me a sense of pride in my environment. Also, around 10 or 11 of my family and I have been partaking in local beach and highway clean ups.

Well, I encourage my little sister to not throw her trash out on the sidewalks because it could go to the ocean. She listens to me and we both throw our trash in the trash cans instead of just throwing it out on the sidewalks like a lot of people do.

Los Angeles, California, USA, age 14.

One day I was walking down the street and I saw the most trash that any body would see in their entire life. So I picked up all the trash. It took me about 3 hours to do all of that. I felt good about it.

I always wanted to help all those people in the third world countries. Also I would like to help the south Africa wild animals because they look so cute when you see them in real life, and I want to help out a bit.

Save The Salmon!

The Bush administration recently proposed damming some of the main streams that flow to the Sacramento River, CA. This stops all possibility of salmon spawning in these streams.

Building of houses along the Trinity River, also in CA, would put silt and sediment in the water. This would suffocate life in the river. It wouldn't help the salmon issue, either.

Salmon are really neat fish, and all the streams and river that may be dammed are important, no matter how small. Please write a letter to your state representative and/or President Bush. Thank you.

The world is a beautiful place! Help keep it clean, and do what you can do to make our world a better place!

Karen, age 14

I am from Ethiopia, where the environment is suffering from lack of knowledge by the society. My friends and I are trying to teach our society with the help of our club. Since we are not well organized we, until now, could not bring any magnificent change.

Age 14.

I am a home schooled student who would like to apply for your awards program. I would like to apply on the voluntary work I do over the summer. I love our environment and enjoy keeping it clean. Every summer during the month of August, I get together with a group from the Army Corps of Engineers. We work together to clean the shorelines of Lake Allatoona in Atlanta, Georgia. We gather bottles, glass, metal objects, poles, batteries, etc. from our shorelines. This is a wonderful opportunity for me since I want to be an environmental engineer. I also enjoy collecting badges from the Corps for doing my job and look forward to the years to come.

My name is Holly. When I was in the 7th grade I learned, over the news, how cruel people could be to animals. I wasn't going to let this problem continue if I could help it. To try to help our community I decided to do volunteer work at the Humane Society.

Although I found doing this fun and entertaining, I found one problem with the Humane Society. They don't give wild and sometimes out of control animals, a chance to live longer. Instead they give the animals about two to three weeks to get used to humans being around, but they do not hold or nourish the animals.

So, one day when no one was in the room with me while I was cleaning a cage, I decided to treat the cat that had a sign on the cage that said "WILD do not handle" with love and passion. In doing so it let me hold it, it did not scratch or hiss at me or at any of the other animals. The manager then walked in and noticed me holding this sweet creature. He asked if it was the wild cat. I answered, "It's not wild, all it needs is some love and attention."

As a result of this incident they had a meeting about the care of the wild animals and finally came to a conclusion. They decided to extend the life to 4 weeks giving more time for the animals to be handled and nurtured by the employees and then hopefully adopted.

In conclusion, take a risk and save our world from the cruelties of others. Get involved with the safety of your environment and its many species. You would be surprised what animals could do for us.

Holly, age 16.

My story is about protecting the parks. For us to protect the parks we need to not allow smoking in the parks. There could be a smoking section outside of the park. We should put up signs and posted to let the smokers know how far away they have to be from the park.

We should also make a bench decorated with signs saying no smoking and no drugs. Well, I hope my idea sounds interesting.
