Amazing Stories

Save The Duckling

Yesterday, my Mom told us there was a mother duck and a bunch of baby ducks crossing the street. We ran out to see them. Our neighbor told us that several fell into the storm drain on the road. My dad and my neighbor were able to get the heavy grate up. My dad and my neighbor were too big so I volunteered to go down and look in the pipe.

I looked in with a flashlight and could see that the pipe ran into another going across. I could not see the ducks, but I could hear them. My dad then opens up a manhole from the sidewalk. There was a bigger pipe, but it was a much deeper hole. I was a little scared, but I said I would go down and look. My parents lifted me into the hole. I looked up the pipe with a flashlight and could see one duckling.

We tried to get him to come down. My neighbor gave me a big Stick with a big strainer attached to the end. I was finally able to get the duck close enough and I put the strainer over him. My dad got a cookie tray to slide under it and we were able to save one of the ducks.

I took it over where the mother was and put the strainer on the ground. The duck took off really quick and ran to his mommy. I was happy that I was able to save at least one of the ducks. I was scared to go down in the pipe, but I really wanted to save those cute little ducks.

Brian, age 8.
